October Fitness Tip
This month I would like to introduce a concept that although perhaps is not new, it may be presented in a new light. The topic of speeding up your metabolism is the focus of this article. It is one of those interesting kinesthetic/biological aspects that you may recall by revisiting memories of your high school days where some of your friends, mostly guys in this example and perhaps some gals, would frustrate their counterparts because they could seemingly eat anything and never gain a pound. In fact, it would often seem the more they ate, the skinner they became. Sound familiar? The opposite of this example is of course those of us who could just imagine a French baguette with cheese and literally notice a feeling of being full, and the sense of more weight.
Many studies are now being done on human metabolism and much of the new research is encouraging and surprising. Some of these concepts are integrated into “MARY-JO’S FIT FOR LIFE “ principals, which you will find on the video clip “NUTRITION TIPS” next month, and others are drawn from the new research available. My “Fit For Life” principals have seven key points which, if followed, establish a way of living that is sure to give you optimum results of health, vitality and happiness. Number two of my principals is where we will begin here, in this discussion of fitness and metabolism.

A Brief History of Yoga
Consider the medium of the World Wide Web, the vastness and the profundity of such a tool to deliver information and access to millions upon millions of people. In a very similar but more discrete movement, we are witnessing the incredible surge of yoga into the popular culture. What is yoga and why is it becoming so popular? Where does it come from, and what exactly does it do?
If you haven’t asked these questions before, you may b e starting to now, or you may be one of the millions of North Americans who simply flock to the latest yoga studios and gyms to partake in what would be commonly called a yoga class as if it were just another fitness class, and to you these questions may seem irrelevant. Except that the yoga class is more visceral and physical than anything else you’ve done before, and whether you know it or not, yoga is changing the relationship between your mind and body.

Fitness Tip for August
Fitness n. – the quality or state of being physically fit; the quality of being suitable, qualified or morally fit for something.
These definitions come from “The Canadian Oxford” dictionary. When I sit with the definitions, particularily the second I can’t help but correlate it to healthy self esteem. That when one feels the “quality or state of being physically fit” – one naturally feels qualified, suitable and able. That is not to say that one who is not fit is not worthy, but the state of being in oneself will be augmented, (particularly one’s Self Esteem) when one is fit. Certainly there are numerous reports, both scientific and general that espouse the benefits of a regular fitness routine. Let’s face it our bodies are meant to MOVE.

Nutritions Tip for September
So much information, so little time, where does one begin and who do you trust?? These are the questions that I get often as a Yoga Teacher, Coach and Chef at Mountain Trek Health and Fitness Retreat. With the huge increase in nutritional science and research, coupled with the alarming array of obesity and health related problems it is no wonder that we as a nation are concerned and looking to all sorts of information from experts. Lets make it as simple as possible and deal with some of the obvious issues and then wind our way into a more in depth look at nutrition and wellness.
From all counts it is evident that the average North American diet is what’s killing us and causing weight problems. It is not news to anyone that fast food, and diets highly concentrated in refined carbohydrates, cooked meats, saturated fats and sugar are the cause of many problems. This is not to say you have to give up your meat, you just need to adjust things perhaps.

Intro to Energy Anatomy
This month, as a way of introducing Energy Anatomy and how energy works or doesn’t in you, I would like to introduce a few concepts and then we will play at navigating ourselves around our own “ENERGY FIELD”.
Everything on this planet is comprised of energy. The energy we see is physical energy and yet there are many other forms that we cannot see. Wind, sound and thought are a few of the ones we cannot see and yet we know they exist. It is “thought energy” that we are going to talk about today.
What is “thought energy”, and how does it move as energy in our bodies? This is the question we will delve into here. This is a key concept to begin to understand and to feel familiar with.
